A economia colonial no século XVII foi sustentada segundo as ideias mercantilistas na extração de metais preciosos e nas trocas comerciais. O comércio estava sujeito a dois princípios básicos: monopólio e exclusivismo comercial.
Até que o monopólio universal fosse revogado, a América Espanhola só poderia comerciar com os territórios espanhóis da Europa. Por esta razão, foi criada em 1503 a chamada Casa de Contratación de Indias de Sevilha, que era a entidade encarregada de fiscalizar o cumprimento do monopólio.

Além disso, funcionava um Tribunal Consulado em cada vice-reinado. Ele exercia o controle de todo o movimento comercial e intercedia em tudo que se relacionava a ele.
Vice-Reino da Nova Espanha
No aspecto econômico, a mineração e o comércio ganharam especial relevância no Vice-Reino da Nova Espanha.
Mineração
A descoberta de inúmeras pedreiras mineiras atraiu a atenção da Coroa, interessada em explorá-las. Essas minas eram mantidas pelos moradores locais, que buscavam melhorias em sua qualidade de vida.
Diferentes materiais foram extraídos dessas minas, como prata, ouro e cobre. Cidades de mineração foram criadas em torno das minas. Isso produziu o surgimento de novos rebanhos e propriedades agrícolas dedicadas ao seu abastecimento.
Junto com a construção de estradas para que saísse o que foi obtido nas minas, tudo isso gerou um importante impulso econômico.
A Coroa cedeu um imposto, denominado Quinto Real, com o qual foi retirado 20% do material extraído. Foi baseado em uma sucessão de bulas emitidas em 1494 pelo Papa Alexandre VI, que indicava que todas as terras conquistadas na América pertenciam à Espanha.
A mineração tinha privilégios em relação a outras seções produtivas. Esses privilégios baseavam-se no discurso econômico predominante da época, onde se considerava que a riqueza se baseava nos metais preciosos que se possuía.
As principais minas exploradas na Nova Espanha foram Pachuca, Zacatecas, Guanajuato e Fresnillo.
Comércio
A regulamentação comercial estava nas mãos da Casa de Contratación, com sede em Sevilha, Espanha. As políticas proteccionistas e o monopólio exigido pelo capital, impossibilitaram um desenvolvimento óptimo da componente económica do vice-reino.
O comércio direto com outras áreas do império foi proibido. Todas essas disposições protecionistas levaram ao aumento de atividades ilegais, como o contrabando ou a pirataria.
Essas ações foram promovidas tanto por nações estrangeiras que buscavam novos mercados, quanto por comerciantes locais que buscavam contornar as medidas restritivas e tarifárias impostas pela Coroa.
Vice-Reino do Peru
No século XVI, estabeleceu-se uma política comercial monopolística e um conjunto de entidades de controle estatal para poder exportar da forma mais eficiente a maior quantidade dos metais extraídos para a península espanhola.
Mineração
No Vice-Reino do Peru, a atividade mineira era predominante e um dos pilares da economia, pelo menos durante o século XVI e grande parte do século XVII. Embora não tenha sido a única atividade econômica que os colonizadores introduziram, foi a atividade que mais estabeleceu mudanças sociais, econômicas e até políticas.
As melhores minas, por seu desempenho e qualidade, eram propriedade da coroa espanhola. Por outro lado, pequenas minas eram exploradas por particulares, devendo pagar o Quinto Real a título de imposto. Isso correspondeu a 20% da riqueza obtida.
As principais pedreiras de mineração foram: Potosí, Huancavelica, Castrovirreyna, Cajabamba, Cerro de Pasco, Carabaya, Hualgayoc e Cayllama, todas localizadas no atual Peru.
Embora naquela época a mineração fosse uma atividade arriscada e desorganizada, seu pico foi tal que mais de 40% das jazidas que atualmente operam no Peru, durante o período de vice-reinado, já haviam sido descobertas e exploradas.
Comércio
No vice-reinado, o comércio era monopolista, devido ao caráter comercial e exclusivo que prevalecia na economia.
Todo este apogeu comercial converteu o Vice-Reino do Peru no eixo do movimento comercial e o porto de Callao o mais importante de toda a América espanhola. Portanto, não é surpresa que naquela época ele tenha sido vítima de ataques de corsários, piratas e obstrucionistas.
Os navios carregados de mercadorias saíam de Sevilha anualmente, protegidos por outros navios da marinha espanhola. Os que iam para o Peru eram galeões e chegaram primeiro ao porto de Cartagena das Índias. De lá viajaram para o porto de Portobelo.
Em Portobelo foi realizada uma grande feira, da qual compareceram os empresários de Lima. Eles chegaram a este lugar por meio do chamado Exército do Mar do Sul.
Depois de feitas as vendas e compras em Portobelo, os mercadores de Lima embarcaram mais uma vez na Marinha do Mar do Sul para chegar a Callao.
Desse porto despachavam a mercadoria por via terrestre para as cidades e vilas do interior do vice-reinado, como Cuzco, Arequipa, Buenos Aires, Charcas, Montevidéu e Santiago.
Vice-Reino do Río de la Plata
O Vice-Reino do Río de la Plata surgiu em 1776, dentro do estabelecido pelas Reformas Bourbon.
Neste vice-reinado a economia continuou com o modelo extrativo-exportador. Como a própria metrópole espanhola e os outros vice-reinados, estava longe da proto-industrialização, que surgiu no século 18, e sua evolução subsequente.
Mineração
A mineração não era a atividade principal, como acontecia nos outros vice-reinados. A atividade de mineração foi limitada apenas a um conjunto de depósitos que foram explorados na Bolívia de hoje.
No entanto, grandes quantidades de prata e ouro foram exportadas do porto de Buenos Aires, chegando principalmente do Alto Peru.
Comércio
O nome deste vice-reino, Río de la Plata, vem do produto econômico mais importante para sua economia, a prata. No entanto, isso foi extraído principalmente de minas localizadas no Alto Peru.
Esta atividade econômica representou o desenvolvimento do tráfego terrestre. Geralmente circulava seguindo o Caminho Real, do Alto Peru ao porto de Buenos Aires. Esse tráfego também gerou a criação de cavalos, mulas e burros.
O comércio, voltado para a exportação de prata e ouro, cereais, pecuária e derivados, era fortemente regulado pela metrópole. Isso ajudou a espalhar as atividades de contrabando.
Alguns espanhóis tinham atividades comerciais em suas mãos, que por sua vez se apropriaram de grande parte do poder político.
Pecuária
Uma importante atividade econômica foi constituída pela pecuária, estabelecida principalmente em Buenos Aires, cuja importância na área é preservada até hoje.
