John Roderigo Dos Passos (1896-1970) foi um escritor e romancista americano que também se destacou na profissão de jornalista. Foi um dos intelectuais que integraram a “Geração Perdida”, ou seja, aqueles que se mudaram para a Europa entre 1918 e 1929 por motivos políticos e sociais.
A obra deste escritor pertenceu à corrente modernista, também teve como traços marcantes a sobriedade e a temática social. Algumas das obras mais representativas de Dos Passos foram Três soldados (1922), transferência de Manhattan (1925), A primeira catástrofe (1919-1932), a trilogia dos EUA (1930-1936) e Midcentury (1961).

John Dos Passos serviu por muito tempo como jornalista de guerra e tradutor. Ele também viajou por vários países do mundo para entrar em contato com o movimento socialista. Por sua atuação literária obteve vários prêmios, incluindo o Prêmio Feltrinelli.
Biografia
Nascimento e família
John Roderigo Dos Passos nasceu em 14 de agosto de 1896 na cidade de Chicago, Illinois, em uma família de classe média de ascendência portuguesa. Seus pais eram John R. Dos Passos, advogado e político, e Lucy Addison Sprigg Madison.
Formação acadêmica
John Dos Passos estudou durante anos em escolas importantes em sua cidade natal, Chicago, como o Choate Rossemary Hall. De sua adolescência inclinada por letras e cultura, ele decidiu estudar artes na Universidade de Harvard e se formou em 1916.
As muitas viagens que fez com seus pais a várias nações também contribuíram com experiências importantes para seu treinamento e conhecimento. Estava relacionado com a cultura, arte, tradições e literatura de países como: Bélgica, Espanha, Portugal e Inglaterra.
Experiências juvenis
Dois anos antes de terminar seus estudos universitários, ele se juntou ao grupo de colaboradores de Richard Norton, coincidindo com a eclosão da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Algum tempo depois, ele foi para a Itália como membro voluntário do movimento internacional da Cruz Vermelha.
Primeiras publicações
Atraído pela literatura e pela escrita, Dos Passos empreendeu um projeto junto com alguns amigos para desenvolver um romance, mas não atingiu o objetivo. Não desistiu e em 1919, com apenas vinte e três anos, publicou: A Iniciação de um Homem, romance relacionado com experiências pessoais.
Após dois anos, o escritor continuou a escrever e lançou uma segunda obra intitulada Três soldados, um romance com traços bélicos. Em 1923 teve uma estadia em Espanha, sendo o país onde concebeu Rocinante regressa à estrada. Foi com esses três primeiros romances que ele entrou no mundo das letras.
Duas etapas entre as viagens
John dos Passos tinha um gosto especial por viagens, razão pela qual passou grande parte de sua vida descobrindo novos territórios. Em 1924 foi a Paris para absorver todos os movimentos artísticos, culturais e literários em ascensão.
Depois de um tempo, ele voltou ao seu país e se estabeleceu em Nova York. Embora quisesse se dedicar ao teatro, o escritor teve que retornar rapidamente ao Velho Continente.
Em 1921 foi para a Pérsia, depois para Damasco e depois para Bagdá, locais onde teve experiências enriquecedoras e únicas, visto que era um homem sempre em busca de conhecimento.
Um grande sucesso
O crescente escritor caminhava lentamente para o sucesso, o que veio com sua quarta publicação. Em 1925, Manhattan transfer foi lançado e acabou sendo o romance com o qual Dos Passos obteve mais reconhecimento. Nesse trabalho, ele lidou com a frutífera economia dos Estados Unidos chamada "Roaring Twenties".
Ideologia e pensamento
A nível ideológico, o escritor estava próximo do socialismo, embora soubesse manter-se firme no seu pensamento político independente. Não demorou muito para mostrar sua rejeição quando os ativistas e imigrantes italianos Bartolomeo Banzatti e Nicola Sacco foram assassinados por sua filosofia política anarquista.
Em 1928 viajou para a extinta União Soviética com o intuito de conhecer mais de perto o sistema de governo, com Helsinque e Leningrado fazendo parte de seu percurso. Na época ele chegou a Moscou e ingressou nas atividades teatrais, onde se relacionou com os renomados cineastas Sergei Eisenstein e Vsévolod Pudovkin.
Uma viagem ousada
Dos Passos passou uma temporada na Rússia e foi assim que integrou uma viagem expedicionária pela cidade de Daguestão, missão do então ministro Anatoli Lunacharski. Depois de passar por várias situações que colocaram sua vida em risco, ele finalmente conseguiu voltar para a América do Norte.

De volta à América, o amor bateu à sua porta quando conheceu Katherine Smith, que pertencia ao círculo de amizades do escritor Ernest Hemingway. Casaram-se em 1929 e fixaram-se por algum tempo na Europa, berço dos mais intensos movimentos literários e artísticos da época.
A trilogia Dos Passos e a Espanha
Dos Passos e Smith viajaram constantemente para solo norte-americano sem que a difícil situação econômica mundial - a conhecida "Grande Depressão" - os afetasse. No início da década de 1930 o escritor começou a desenvolver sua famosa trilogia: EUA.
A Espanha se tornou um destino frequente para o intelectual e sua esposa. Eles visitaram o país em 1932, na época da Segunda República, ou seja, o regime democrático que suplantou o reinado de Afonso XIII. Dos Passos era um observador da situação e nesse ano escreveu: 1919.
Últimos anos e morte
John Dos Passos passou os últimos anos de sua vida, como muitos de seus colegas, entre escritos, publicações, viagens e reconhecimentos. Seus últimos trabalhos incluem Midcentury (1961) e Unforgettable Years (1966). O escritor faleceu em 28 de setembro de 1970 em Baltimore, Maryland.
Estilo
O estilo literário de Jonh Dos Passos caracterizou-se por estar enquadrado no movimento modernista. Suas obras se destacaram pelo uso de uma linguagem simples, clara e precisa, com presença de críticas, questionamentos e reflexões sobre as circunstâncias políticas e sociais que ele teve que viver e que pôde apreciar.
O tema principal das obras deste escritor americano girava em torno de questões sobre a sociedade da época, conflitos de guerra e aspectos culturais e artísticos. Ele também desenvolveu textos autobiográficos e de vida para figuras conhecidas como Ernest Hemingway e EE Cummings.

Era uma trilogia do escritor composta por: O paralelo 42 (1930), 1919 (1932) e O dinheiro grande (1936). Os três romances saíram juntos em uma edição de 1938 com o nome pelo qual são conhecidos mundialmente: EUA. O escritor contou as histórias por meio de quatro formas narrativas diferentes.
Dos Passos se encarregou de contar o dia a dia das pessoas antes, durante e depois da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Foram expostas as vantagens e desvantagens para se alcançar qualidade de vida. Esta obra foi incluída nos 100 melhores romances em inglês do século 20 para várias revistas literárias ou portais de imprensa.
